CHILDRENS’ COACH TRIPS TO THE SEASIDE
Between the period 1949 to 1957, Mr and Mrs R G Pike of Willowbrook Farm held an annual garden fete and jumble sale. With the proceeds, they hired three coaches to take village families on day trips to Hunstanton, Skegness or Mablethorpe. Trips usually took place around the end of June or July.
Mr & Mrs Pike were always there at 8.00am to see the families leave for the coast, and each school age child was given a packet with a half a crown in for their pocket money.
As it was so soon after the end of World War II it was a tremendous treat as during this era nobody could afford holidays. It was thought that many times Mr & Mrs Pike subsidised the outings out of their own pocket.
The coaches were hired from a company from Stamford, called Patches. The coaches were cream and luxurious for the time.
