Church Row or Church Lane (1891 census name) was the address for a row of stone cottages built along the north perimiter of the churchyard. There is still a mention of this road in the 1911 census, but the houses must have been pulled down between that year and 1919 when they started building the new development (St Mary’s Hill) of eight brick houses, positioned south to north in the area behind the cottages. A narrow path from Main Street (Town Street) was the only access to these cottages.
If we look at the two images of the maps which shows Church Row 123 years apart, you will notice that there has been very little change to the area. One of the cottages to the west of Church Row appears to have disappeared (this can also be substantiated by the 1911 census).
Two of the families on the 1911 census moved to the new houses when they were built.
