Private George Sanderson

Northamptonshire Regiment 3rd (Reserve) Battalion 13826

George was the fifth child of George and Mary Ann (née Scotney)  Sanderson, and was  born on 19th May 1885 in Parsons Yard, Woodnewton.  In the 1901 Census he was shown as working and living at the Talbot Hotel in Oundle and by 1911 George had moved to Thrapston to live with his married sister Annie Elizabeth Fletcher, her husband and their family.  His occupation was recorded as a Fitter.  However, by 1915 he had married Bertha Sutcliffe from Farcet.

George enlisted on 3rd February 1915 and served in Theatre of War in France and for this was awarded the 1914-15 Star Medal₁ and the Victory₂  and British War₃ Medals.  He was discharged on 27th March 1919 as Class Z Reserve. When George provided his personal details for his military pension he gave his address as Grays Cottage, Nassington and he and his wife are recorded there on the Electoral Roll for Spring 1921

A few months later the family moved to Ailsworth.  The 1921 Census also recorded that  George was ‘out of work’ having previously been employed as a general labourer in the Peter Brotherhood’s Engineering Works.

In 1939 George was living in Peterborough having moved from Farcet where he was registered in 1933.  He died on 16th May 1972 at 46 Glendon Street, Peterborough.

The 1914–15 Star is a campaign medal of the British Empire which was awarded to officers and men of British and Imperial forces who served in any theatre of the First World War against the Central  European Powers during 1914 and 1915. The medal was never awarded singly and recipients also received the British War Medal  and Victory Medal.
