Private Charles Edwin BARLEY

Charles Barley was born to parents Charles and Amelia Susan on 4^th March 1900.  We know from the 1901 and 1911 census’ that the family was living in Luck Lane, Buckden, Huntingdon.  However, for Charles junior to be on our Roll of Honour, the family must have moved to Woodnewton after 1911.  His parents appear on the Electoral Roll in 1919 (first one to hand), so they were in the village when Charles returned from his tour of duty.

Unfortunately, no military papers can be traced, but we have to assume that he would not have joined up until 1916, because of his age.

Charles married Phyllis Monk in 1927, and from the 1939 Register it can be seen that they were living with Phyllis’ parents at the Shuckborough Arms in Southwick.  Charles died at the age of 69 years.
