NOVEMBER 1st Stood at arms from 5.00am to 6.00am dismounted outpost at 7.00pm.

2nd ‘K’ coy paraded at 2.00pm and went to Vaal Station and proceeded down country.

3rd No 2 section outlying picket. 

4th Dismounted outpost at 7.00am church parade at 9.30am packed wagons by 12 noon and paraded at 12.30pm and moved about 1 mile under a large kopje. 

5th & 6th l & 2 sections paraded at 6.00am to be escort to the field guns while we went out with the cavalry to fetch in loyal farmers and loot the farms of the Boers who had joined the commando. 3 & 4 section on outpost about 12.30pm, 70 men paraded to go to Standerton for the M Inf. 

7th Stood at arms from 4.30am. to 5.00am.  Tooday the 5-inch was sent by rail to some kopje where we had left the RB near Vlakfontein. 

8th Turned out 5.00am packed up by 5.30am paraded at 7.00am and marched to Wessel’s Farm arriving there at 1.30pm . Dstance today about 12miles. 

9th Turned out at 6.00am packed by 6.30am paraded at 7.00am and moved off at 8.00am. Coy was rear guard today, we only went about 7 miles today arriving there abut 10.30am. 1 & 2 sections mounted outpost 6.00pm. 

10th Stood at arms till about 3.00am moved off at 5.00am the baggage went straight into Standerton, but we made a wide detour to the left of Standerton at last arriving there about 12.45pm. 

11th Turned out 6.00am church parade, bathing parade 11.15am packed up at 1.00pm and paraded at 3.00pm and marched along the Verde Road for about 8 miles at a place called Haartebiestfontein arriving there about 6.15pm. 

12th Turned out 6.00am packed by 6.30am an empty convoy passed from Verde on the way to Standerton for supplies it was escorted by Yeomanry Manchester Regiment, Leinster’s and a few Mounted Infantry. Moved off at 8.00am coy rear guard after doing about 7 miles we halted at 12.15pm at Delanger Drift. At 4.30pm two guns and half a coy of our own men and the Y.M lnfantry went out to a kopje on or right rear where there reported to be some Boers but they returned at 5.15pm without seeing any enemy, each section commander was issued with a pair of field glasses. Rifle inspection 6.00pm and emergency rations. 

13th Rouse at 6.00am right half inlying picket and also parade at 9.00am to go to some farms with some mounted men and two pompoms.  Our guns were put into position in front of the camp to cover our advance. When we returned to camp about 2.45pm we found the camp struck ready to move off, we brought in a few families for protection at 3.30pm. The column moved off to Wiedebeastefontein Farm a distance about 4 miles arriving there at 5.15pm. About 6.00pm we heard two loud explosions from the direction we had just come and afterwards heard that the Engineers had blown up two farms with guncotton. The right half rode in wagons. 

14th Stood to arms from 4.30am to 5.00am at 6.00am the wagons with the women and children and cattle were sent into camp, rifle inspection 6.00pm. 

15th Rouse at 5.00am 1 & 2 sections paraded at 6.00am with 2 pompoms to go out to Cooting Farm whilst they were out they were sniped at and the pompoms did a good bit of service. 

16th Rouse at 5.30am the left half and ‘B’ coy escorted the Coot’s cattle and some families half way to Standerton. At 6.30am the Boers commenced sniping into the camp but they were soon dispersed by the YM lnfantry who chased them with colt guns, they returned at 5.15pm and I heard that they had one killed and an officer wounded, right half outpost 6.30pm. 

17th Rouse at 4.00am packed blankets etc at 4.30am. Left half advance guard and rode in the wagons, after we had gone about 4 miles west of Standerton the Boers sniped at our mounted troops but a few volley from our left half coy and a few shells from our pompoms cleared them off, owing to a heavy mist coming over one of our scouts fell into the hands of the Boers, we halted for about an hour and then proceeded in a horseshoe shape to the left of Standerton. The pompom came in action again when we reached the ridge; we sighted a farm about 2 miles in front, which we made for arriving there about 3.00pm; The cavalry and pompom advanced to a ridge that was overlooking the plain that the enemy was returning over and commenced shelling them. The name of the farm is Dupreez Farm and it was well stocked with cattle and mealies. 

18th Rouse at 5.30am, my coy and left half ‘H’ coy escorted two 15 pounder guns to the ridge to cover the YM Infantry who went out onto the plain and drove the cattle in.  About 11.30am we returned to camp after putting out a couple of farms, which the Boers went into. 

19th Rouse 4.30am packed blankets etc at 5.00am, marched off towards Standerton at 6.30am our coy advanced guard marched about 4 miles and then halted for about one hour whilst the pompoms fired at the enemy who were following up behind, we then done another 4 miles and then halted again. Then we went through Standerton arriving there about 4.00pm fairly knocked up after doing about 14 miles. 

20th Rouse 6.30am bathing parade 10.30am rifles at 6.00pm, we were permitted to go into town from 2.00pm to 6.00pm. 

21st Rouse 6.30am. packed up at 1.00pm and marched of at 2.30pm to Steyn’s Farm at 5.30pm after about 7 miles march. 

22nd Rouse at 6.00am packed up at 6.30am marched off at 8.00am and done about 4 miles then the column halted until 2.00pm then we resumed marching and went to Grool Spruit Farm, a distance of about 14 miles from the last camp arriving there about 6.15pm. 

23rd Rouse at 6.30am packed up at 1.00pm and marched off at 2.15pm and went to Druckfontein about 5 miles and halted for the night. 

24th Rouse at 5.30am packed up at 6.30am left camp standing. The column with the exception of the cooks, servants and wagon packed advanced in skirmishing over to some kopjes on the left front, which was held by some Boers. We commenced firing about 7.30am our guns about 3.15pm we then returned to Home’s Farm making a distance all day of about 9 miles, which had been burnt by the Boers before they left it. 

25th Rouse at 6.30am. Today our Regiment had to advance over a series of kopjes to clear them of the enemy, whilst the wagons with the Devon’s and YM Infantry advanced along the plain, from 8.00am till 6.30pm we were firing at the Boers who showed more courage today than any other occasion on the campaign and I was pleased to hear that we had no casualties. About 4.00pm it commenced pouring with rain for about an hour. After doing about 12 miles we halted at a place called Daaspoort Spruit for the night. 

26th Rouse 6.30am packed up at 7.30am and marched off at 8.00am to Vlakfontein Station at 1.30pm here four company’s of the Devon’s were detached to relieved the R.B’s at the station and Zuikerbosch. Parade at 4.00pm and marched to Even’s Farm arriving there about 6.00pm after doing about 12 miles today, right half coy outpost for the night. 

27th Stood to arms from 4.30am to 5.00am bathing parade 7.00am then returned to camp. The 5 inch gun that was with the RB on the hill overlooking our camp opened fire on a party of Boers who were trying to ambush two ambulance wagons of the Y.M. Inf and pompom’s went in the direction of Vlakfontein Station but returned to camp without coming into contact with enemy. Parade at 5.30pm with rifles. 

28th Rouse at 6.00am packed up 6.30am marched of at 8.00am towards Heidelberg when we arrived at Zuikerbosch we halted for a few minutes my coy right flank guard and we also halted at Kraal Station then we marched to Pieters Hill were we halted for two hours in that time ‘H’ coy relieved ‘A’ coy who went with us into camp close to the Johannesburg Road arriving there about 5.30pm after doing about 16 miles, between Zuickerbosch and Kraal Station we met some scouts of Br Hamiltons Brigade who were out reconnoitring. 

29th Rouse 5.30am 6.00pm parade with rifles.

30th Rouse 5.30am bathing parade 10.30am rifles 6.00pm.
