In the 1980’s,  the Landlord of the White Swan was Richard Turton and he agreed to take over from Lesley as sub postmaster, and in agreement with the Head Post Office, the business transferred to the White Swan in 1985. The shop was positioned to the rear of the public house, and opened in what was the old kitchen.  The Post Office/Shop was opened most days and Bridget W continued to work at the Post Office on Tuesdays and Thursdays and also as the relief person during holiday times.

As this was the only shop in the village by that time, you could find most things for sale.  If a request from a customer was made for something that was not availble, Dick would obtain it for people.  There were many OAP’s in the village who did not drive so this shop was their only source of everyday groceries.

The Post Office continued at this address until 1990, when Dick and Bobbie Turton retired from the pub business and left the village. From this time on the facility of a Post Office was no longer available in Woodnewton.  The post box remained alongside Orchard Crescent and a second one was installed at the entrance to Lindsey Close.
