When Mac Allen passed away in 1978, the Post Office, which had been housed in the front room of his cottage at no 13 Main Street, closed. Lesley Fuller, a resident of Woodnewton, applied for the position of sub postmistress and was granted a licence on 15 November 1978, to convert the dining room of her house at No 5 St Mary’s Hill as a post office and supplier of stationery. A 
second door was installed at the front of the house, so that access to the post office went directly into the shop. The post box, which had been located in the garden wall of the previous property, had been removed to a new position at the top of St Mary’s Hill, in front of the Orchard Crescent Bungalows (still situated there today). The Post Office was open every day from 9am., to 5.30pm., with half day closing initially on a Saturday. A few years later the hours of opening on a Wednesday were reduced and that day also became half day shopping.

A few years later the hours of opening on a Wednesday were reduced and that day also became half day shopping.In 1981, when the Post Office Licence was renewed, Lesley applied to sell other goods in her front room, which was granted and for the first time in years, the village had a shop, which stocked not only cards etc., but basic essentials. By this time, Lesley not only had the post office and shop, she was also a mother. As the Head Post Office required for a second person to be trained and employed within a sub post offices, Lesley trained some village residents: Sine H, Joyce D and Bridget W, to help her when needed. Linda Fitzjohn, who was at University also helped out during the holiday periods.
The post office and shop closed in 1985 due to Lesley’s personal situation and transferred to The White Swan.
