Private George William TRAYFORD (Rippin)

George William was born on 5th March 1894 at Lodge Farm, Apethorpe and was given the name of George William Trayford Rippin as his parents didn’t marry until 1896. His mother was Mary Ann Rippin. He attended Woodnewton School as George William Trayford and left on 13th March 1908.

In the 1901 Census he was living at Lodge Farm Apethorpe with his grandparents. The 1911 Census shows George still living at Apethorpe with his grandmother and his Uncle George Rippin and he stayed there until he joined up.

He attested with the 3rd Northamptonshire Regiment Foot at Peterborough on 25th May 1915 at the age of 21 years 2 months. He was 5ft 2ins and weighed 110lbs with a 34in chest. His next of kin was registered as ‘Father’ – George William Trayford and his occupation was given as Farm
Labourer for Major Brassey of Apethorpe.  He was posted on 29th January 1916, but there is no record of where he was sent.

He was demobbed on the 8th April 1919, and transferred to Class Z (Reserves No 201481.

George was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

In July 1922 George married Emma Burkett of Fotheringhay and they had 5 children. In the 1939 Register, Mr and Mrs George William Rippin were living at Apethorpe Lodge Cottages and he was registered as a Tractor Driver.  George William Trayford (Rippin) died at West Deeping in 1970 and his death was registered in Bourne, Lincs.

He appears on the Woodnewton Roll of Honour as his parents were living in Woodnewton.
