John William Hull was born on 25th July 1897 at Marholm near Peterborough.  His parents were natives of Woodnewton – James Hull, a Horsekeeper, and Eliza Smith. In the 1901 Census it is shown that they were living in Woodnewton with John’s eldest sister Annie Elizabeth, (also born at Marholm in1895) and sister Bertha born in Woodnewton in the Census year.  James and Eliza went on to have three more sons and a daughter – James born 1902, Herbert born 1903, Harold born 1906, Hilda born 1908. John William started at the village school on 6th August 1901.

He served as a Private in the Cambridgeshire Regiment and later transferred into the Labour Corps (480780) and was awarded  the Victory₁ and  British₂ Medals.

He returned to Woodnewton around 1919/1920 and worked as a Farm Labourer for a local farmer, Mr Pike.   In 1922 he married Clara Bingham and they had two children, Bernard William born 1924 and Violet May born 1926, but sadly Clara died in 1927.  He then married Fanny Eva Gynn in 1935.

When John died on 22nd June1976, he was living at 7 Eastfield Street, Nassington. However, he is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard, Woodnewton.

1. The recipient had to have entered any theatre of war between 5^th August 1914 and 11^th November 1918 inclusive, and who was awarded the 1914 Star or the 1914-1915 Star and to most of those who were awarded the British War medal.  It is not awarded singly.
